The B-Team's unbeaten league record came to end against Hitchin in a performance below the level we have come to expect from this team.
After a positive start to the game, Luke Foster opening the scoring converting his own try, Hitchin responded quickly and took control of the first half with three tries and two conversions taking full advantage of some poor handling and un-convincing tackling from Stortford. We did manage to end the half on a positive note, Cameron driving toward the line through a strong defence but falling just short was able to present the ball for Luca to pick up and dive over the pile of bodies to get the ball down to end the half 12-19 down.
However, the pattern of play in the second half remained in favour of the visitors, two early tries and one conversion stretched their lead. Ed Jenks (Captain) was then instrumental in Stortford's best phase of play, first making a great pass out to Ben at outside centre who was able to make good ground before off-loading to Dillon on the wing who, but for a strong defensive tackle could have scored himself but was able to feed the ball back to Ed who found space to cross the line for a well deserved try.
Hitchin then ran away with the game, three more tries with two very difficult successful conversions and a penalty confirmed the 17-53 victory as they continued their own unbeaten league run.
We'll put this performance down to a half term hangover, but next week we face Hitchin again in the cup and the boys now know exactly what they need to strengthen in order to get the win and progress to the final.
Stortford player of the match went to Luke Foster who made some great attacking runs but was also strong in defensive rucks.
