BSRFC U15B 12 - 55 UPMINSTER RFC

However the scoreline may look, tonight's floodlight match against Upminster (2nd place in Essex Division 1) demonstrated how far our whole squad has come this year and in particular the resilience and effort from our regular B-team players. Injuries, availability and regular players having the great opportunity to play in the A-team fixture meant starts and full matches for Murray (Capt), Sam W, Alec and Jack as well as a first start since surgery for returning prop Ali O, all of whom stepped up and gave it their all in a tough match.

Upminster were handed an early lead after a lofted kick forward dropped out of the floodlights glare and hit a temporarily blinded Jacob full in the face, knocking him to the floor and the ball into the hands of their on running attack. Jacob, characteristically harsh on himself and wanting to make amends for Upminster's early opener (which was in no way his fault!), then stepped up and made several strong and aggressive runs and was unlucky not to break through the opposition's defences. Three more very similar converted tries followed in the first half, all from powerful runs down the wing gave Upminster a twenty-eight point lead as the half edged towards it's conclusion. However, Stortford were not done and despite losing Murray C (handed the captaincy tonight after several strong performances off of the bench in recent games and playing in the unfamiliar role of Inside Centre) to a head injury sustained in a committed tackle, strung together several phases of play through the forward pack and finally got on the scoreboard through Luca C.

Five more tries in the second half flattered the opposition and it would be fair to say that the game was a lot more even than the result implies. Improvements in rucking and strong scrummaging from our forwards as well as great attacking play from our backs (many playing out of position) showed us all the potential these lads have, however typical Stortford mistakes were once again ruthlessly punished by clinical and fast attacking play from the opposition. Another period of dominant forwards play resulted in another 'consolation try' towards the end, a second for Luca, converted by Paidraig, which demonstrates how this team now play right to the final whistle and don't let their heads drop in the face of adversity.

Another tough game next week away to Hertford, but with a full squad and this 'all in' attitude there is no reason why we should not be competing for the top places in the league.

Star player this week is awarded to Jules who had a great game and was singled out at the end by the referee for his effort in attack and defence and positive attitude inspiring his team mates.
