Who would have thought, at the beginning of the season, that our players would have reached this prestigious position. They performed to such a high standard and showed tremendous skill, grit and determination. This was a great day for the club and a testament to all involved – players; parents; coaches and the club.
Our opponents in the final were a team well know to us, and one with whom we have a healthy level of rivalry: Hertford.
The players were certainly up for the challenge, looking forward to it and excited. The game itself was a hard fought, evenly matched and entertaining encounter. There was no quarter given, all players stepped up to the challenge and played their best and hardest.
Hertford opened the scoring with a breakaway try and went further into the lead with another subsequent try. However, our players heads didn’t drop, they showed determination, grit and character to keep trying and the game swung in our favour with trys being scored and conversions being taken.
This spirited performance really rattled the opposition and when we got within 3 points midway into the 2nd hald (19 - 22), Hertford could see the game slipping away from them.
In an effort to win the game by playing expansive rugby, we unfortunately gifted the opposition 2 trys, leading to a final score of 19 – 32.
All of the payers representing Bishop’s Stortford on the day, both those in the squad and those who turned up to support their fellow players, can be really proud of themselves. Thanks also to all our supporters for making it such a memorable occasion.
I’m sure with the continued efforts we will go one better next season.
