Semi Final of the Herts County Cup, with the u13 A team, currently top of the Saracens Herts Middlesex league, Division 2, playing away against Old Albanians, a close third in Division 1.
The Blues fielded a strong squad and were clearly up for the challenge on a beautifully sunny morning. We started quickly, and despite the size of the opposition, took the game to the OA’s, spending the majority of the first half camped in their half. Our play was intelligent – kicking, handling, tackling – in fact, all aspects of our ball play, was superb. Our forwards dominated the half, giving the OA’s no time at all to get into their stride and with our backs running incisively, we went into half time with a 21 – 0 lead – well beyond our wildest imagination. As expected, the OA’s stepped up their game in the second half and with the sheer size of their No 20 (played No 8) the OA’s put some points on the board with 2 quick tries. Nevertheless, the boys didn’t panic and, with the help of some fresh legs, we were able to extend our lead, finishing the game victors, 28 – 17. Every member of the squad played to their full potential. However, special mention goes to Harry Andrews who scored all 4 tries and to Matthew Ayers who kicked the conversions.
To round off a great team effort, OA’s coaches and parents were magnanimous in defeat, saying that they had heard on the grapevine that the U13’s had improved but they hadn’t realised by how much – a great testament to all.
Now the mere matter of a final against our neighbours, Hertford (currently 2nd in Division 1) – can we make Hertford our 3rd Division 1 scalp this season? (Tring beaten in the quarter final 49-12). On today’s performance, why not?
