Bishop’s Stortford Under 13’s A gave themselves, their coaches and their supporters an early Christmas present with another bonus point win at home to Cheshunt. The 24 -17 victory keeps the Blues top of the Saracen’s Herts and Middlesex Junior League 2.
Bishop’s Stortford showed their metal, learning how to ‘win ugly’ in a scrappy game littered with handling errors. Both teams suffered in the early exchanges due to the frosty conditions but it was the Blues who took the lead after 15 minutes. A smart pick up by Matthew Precious in mid field released Stortford’s back line with Ollie Stevenson scoring in the corner. An excellent, hanging conversion by Scott Mitchell made it 7-0.
Stortford doubled their lead ten minutes later. This time a strong scrum secured possession allowing Ioan Parry to serge through under the posts. Scott Mitchell duly converted.
Sam Richardson came agonisingly close to scoring a third try for the Blues, just before half time, as he literally dribbled the ball down the wing.
The second half was dominated by the boot, with both sides kicking for territory. Stortford’s third try was a mirror image of their second with Ioan Parry this time scoring in the corner. Cheshunt’s response was instant as they took a foothold in the game by scoring a try after some strong forward play. However Stortford secured their bonus point from a set piece try. Harry Belton secured possession at the line out and was not to be denied following a lung bursting run down the wing.
Cheshunt again responded in what was to prove a topsy turvey half with two further tries, one of which was converted to make the final score Bishop’s Stortford A 24 Cheshunt 17.
