Bishops Stortford – 47 Braintree – 7 18th September 2011
Braintree had a very solid pack that tested us in the set plays but could not match our attacking continuous style of play. Goodman was again the catalyst for Stortford, as he was against Chelmesford last match. He injected pace and a direct approach that the team fed off repeatedly as his marauding raids terrorised the opposition. The link between the forwards and back divisions was blurred as the support runs came from every member of the squad. The ball was made available for the backs ‘going forward’ and with the pace of Stewart, Docherty, Chew Treble, Baker and Ali Moore a ‘hat-full’ of tries was inevitable.
It is always difficult to mention one player’s performance above so many that played so well but Finn O’Malley is playing the best rugby this correspondent has seen him play in his 3 seasons at the club. His total commitment, fitness and skill is making a huge difference to the team. He captained the side on Sunday in the absence of club skipper Madsen and lead from the front – as he always does.
On a final note it was great to see so many supporters on Sunday. The injured members of the squad, parents, grandparents and siblings were treated to a great display…..but next week will be very different! Wasps visit us for the first league game of the season. We will need to take the defence up another level and compete ferociously at every ruck.
Lets keep up the momentum!
