With a postponed February fixture, into the Easter Holidays due to recent weather, always a risk that we had a few players missing for this HERTS County Cup Semi-Final fixture vs Barnet and so it came to pass.
With them beating Letchworth in County QF to get to us, we knew a tough day in office to come, as through the week, we accrued 3 more injuries and in the end were short upto 10 squad players. Those 4 that stepped-in, did a great job for us though and after going behind to a well worked try by our hosts we replied with a couple of converted tries ourselves. Unfortunately the bounce of a restart favoured Barnet who ran-in another, untouched and our lead was only 12 - 14 at the break.
The ref had been making good use of the sin-bin and while Barnet were serving another of there x5 yellows issued, (vs none to BSRFC), we got another try out wide to extend our lead to 7 points. With only 1-sub on the day, we tired and had to absorb a lot of pressure, workrate was high but we started falling off tackles and our lines were breached a couple of times, as Barnet also rotated a large squad on and off, to keep there legs fresh. We battled hard however and responded well with just 10 minutes to go, getting a try with some frustration brewing over, one of the Barnet forwards was sent off and with the score at 24 - 24 we just had to hold on, (to WIN on Cup away rule). It was a tense close to the game as Barnet threw everything at us and they had a couple of penalty attempts, sail just wide of the posts, fortunately for the blues.
With Ealing and Letchworth to come in HML will hopefully be well prepared for our 3rd in a row, HERTS County Cup Finals day on 29th April vs Old Albanians, (as with our B's in the Shield).
