Away win 6-21, an excellent performance from a much changed team

Match report

Herts and Middlesex league 2010/11

Sunday 30th January 2011

Twickenham Colts vs Bishops Stortford Colts

(35 minutes each way)

After their resounding win last week in the National Plate a much changed Stortford Colts had to battle hard to win this league encounter 6-21.

The first half was very evenly matched, and it was the ability to retain the ball without conceding penalties, and then convert those you did get, that started to separate the teams.

After 4 minutes Twickenham took the lead with a penalty conceded for not releasing the ball. (3-0)

The half continued without much incident until, on 21 minutes, again for not releasing, Stortford concede a penalty that was converted (6-0)

Stortford were shocked in to action by this second score and following the move of the match involving forwards and backs combining in a flowing 50 metre move, Centre Ashley Boyle scored a superb try. Fly Half Tom Walsh converted a simple kick to tale the score to 6-7.

This remained the score up to half time despite pressure on both try lines.
Half time 6-7.

The second half in which Twickenham had slope advantage, started with early Twickenham pressure, resulting in a missed penalty chance.

6 minutes into the second half Stortford created an overlap which Boyle exploited for his second try of the match. Again Walsh converted, this time from a difficult angle. (6-14)

Some scrappy play followed and after a ruck was slowed down illegally Prop Tom McCrone was shown a yellow card and sin binned for 10 minutes.

Stortford had to change their pack to compensate and as a result were put under increased pressure, but tough tackling prevented Twickenham breaking through to score.

17 minutes in to the half Wing Simon Wasley scored a powerful try which was converted to take the score to 6-21.

Stortford remained on top for the rest of the match but could not add to their score to win a bonus point for a 4th try.
