Southend 8-50 BSRFC Colts
Thanks go to travelling supporters for making near enough even numbers with the Southend locals and certainly more noise. Also thanks to the club for arranging travel by coach which greatly enhanced the experience.
A bright and chilly day with slippery / muddy conditions underfoot. The game kicked off at 12:00 with BSRFC winning the ball back from kick off. Some early nerves from both teams created some unnecessary stand off's before Southend opened the scoring with a try after 7 minutes. BSRFC bounced back within 5 minutes with Luke Bury powering over the line from 15 metres out and a successful conversion by Thomas Walker saw Stortford take the lead. 3 minutes later Southend converted a penalty and BSRFC responded with Piers Martin scoring a storming try down the left hand side, converted well into the wind by Walker who then added a penalty. Half time Southend 8 - 17 BSRFC.
Half time team talk focused on maintaining discipline and achieving greater success at the breakdown. A try from Tom Hitchcock settled the nerves after 5 minutes of the re-start , with 4 further tries following at regular intervals from Sam Tatchell, Walker, Martin and Max Bedford all bar the last being converted by Walker. Southend 8 - 50 BSRFC Colts.
With all substitutes getting game time, this was a very satisfying all round team performance. We look forward to seeing who the next opponents are and receiving the same or better level of travelling support.
The Colts progress to R3 against either Brentwood or Rochford 100.
