Great effort, but a heavy loss to a heavy Hertford team.

Match report December 15th 2012
Bishops Stortford 4s 3: Hertford 24
Apologies for the later match report.
We arrived with a decent team, but still missing regular key players (and goodbye to Liam grimes after his man of the match performance for the 3s.)
Unfortunately this was to show in the game. As they say, the forwards deceide who wins the game, and the backs by how many.
Our forwards competed well in the scrum winning most of their ball against a much heavier and more experienced pack – average weight 17 stones? We also competed well in the line although seemed to be me missing a little height compared to usual, but unfortunately the story of the first half was of their large, strong and fit back row running around the fringes of the rucks and making good yards in loose play. We had a ‘new’ 10 in the form of Sam Read who played well with the ball but we were unable to make many serious challenges on the Hertford line despite excellent effort levels from all players in the team. Half time was about 3 tries to a penalty to Hertford.
The second half unfortunately was a fair rerun of the first half with a couple of substitutions that were unfortunately unable to change the run of the game, and most probably weren’t inspired when we kicked off, they passed down the line and ran around our line…
We still competed well in most mauled ball, but Hertfords weight, experience and clearly play together as a team showed and they maintained their game as we gradually dropped off ours in face of some horrible weather, lack of much ball or territory and an increasing score line against us.
The second half did see our injury streak continue with Pete Richardson go off with a nasty cut to his chin – 5 stiches in A&E after a 5 hour wait – and the resumption of play with Chris James taking his place. This did provide one of 2 moments of DoD potential…
Man of the Match had to go to Mr Drew for his unstinting efforts and bizarre ability to pop up out of a maul with the ball on a regular basis.
Dick of the Day went to Mr Chris James, who on returning to play attempted to catch a ball kicked from a restart, juggled it for a few seconds before the last attempted catch placed it perfectly in the arms of a Hertford wing who then ran through uncontested to score. We won’t mention the other mistake but those who were there probably remember seeing me run across the pitch with the ball…..
As always, great effort guys. Enjoy a well earned Christmas break. Don’t eat too much and we look forward to the return of a few players in the new year and possibly a slightly more settled back line!
