A very tough game.....

BSRFC 4th’s Vs Borehamwood

Bishop’s Stortford 4th’s first game after the Christmas break was away to Borehamwood who are currently flying high at the top of Merit Table 3.
Bishop’s Stortford started the game well, putting pressure on the Borehamwood back line after a penalty was given for an infringement at the scrum. A wayward pass from the backline saw the opposition full back sprint 70 meters only to knock the ball on after a fantastic tackle from Chris Collings. Stortford were then under pressure as wave after wave of attack came their way.

Borehamwood were awarded a penalty as a Stortford player was adjudged as being offside at a ruck. The resultant penalty was kicked and Borhamwood were 3-0 up. Stortford held firm however and rucked as if their lives depended on it. Borehamwood’s first try came 20 minutes into the first half as Stortford continued to defend strongly. A scrum to Stortford 10 meters out was won against the head and Borehamwood’s back line broke quickly, creating an overlap which saw their winger touched down in the corner. The kick went over and the score was now 10-0. Stortford continued to battle but in truth never really looked like scoring as they were starved of possession. Borehamwood second try came as their number 8 powered off the back of a scrum from 5 meters out, handed off the flyhalf and went crashing over the line. The kick sailed through the posts and the half time whistle went to see Borehamwood go in 17-0 up.

The second half was unfortunately more of a one sided affair.
Borehamwood began to increasingly starve Bishop’s Stortford of the ball and without Stortford being able to secure their set piece ball, bodies began to tire from the constant defensive work. Borehamwood went over the line another 5 times in the second half as Stortford struggled to keep hold of the powerful Borehamwood forwards. The final score finished 51-0 to Borehamwood.

Borehamwood are a 1stXV that train twice a week with a large squad of players. It was always going to be a difficult game and in the first half we played exceptionally well. We need to take that effort into the rest of the season.

Forwards Man of the Match was Peter Richardson and backs man of the match was George Keyes. Wally was Clarkey for running offside from the kick off!

Next week we face Old Grammarians!
