A tough outing.....

Bishop’s Stortford 4th’s visited Fullerians who are currently flying high at the top of Merit Table 3. It was always going to be a difficult game away from home but Stortford felt ready for the test and full of confidence after their recent win over Hendon.

In the early exchanges it was Stortford who came off the better. There was a sign of things to come however when a mistake in the backs lead to the Fullerians full back sprinting 20 yards and offloading in the tackle, to set his winger up who went over in the corner.

This was an early set back but Stortford hadn’t seen anything to unduly worry them so far. It wasn’t until ten minutes later when the opposition full back showed what he could do with the ball in hand that Stortford soon began to worry. From the 10 meter line he received the ball and used his searing pace and fantastic feet to beat 2, 3 players and go under the posts. Some frustrating errors bought more pressure on Stortford as they gave away the ball needlessly. With the Fullerians backs in the ascendency, quick ball was the order of the day. The opposition full back raced onto another opportunity but this time turned provider, off loading the ball to his winger for another score. Stortford battled on until half time and went in 21-0 down.

At the start of the second half Stortford began to work the fringes of the rucks well, with David O’Brien putting in a monumental display in the blood and guts of the breakdown. Shortly after half time the Fullerians flanker was sent off for tackling without his arms and Stortford soon took advantage as John Lewis dummied and weaved his way over the line from a quick tap penalty.

Stortford kicked the conversion which bought the score back to 21-7 and Fullerians were still a player down. Soon after the restart the Fullerians full back got ball in space and ripped through the Stortford defence to score a 70 meter try. He did this again 10 minutes later as Stortford failed to cope with the immense class that he showed. Stortford battled on but with Fullerians now back to 15 players the try’sstarted to flow as the defence tired.

The final score was 7-47 to Fullerians.

Forwards man of the match was Dave O’Brien for an outstanding performance at Prop and Backs man of the match was David Jarvis for his brilliant distribution and defence.
