Bishops Stortford 3s 50 - Hitchin 2s 12

This was an important match. It was clear for the league table that Hitchin were a strong team and that they needed to beat Stortford.

Kickoff on this perfect day (wet, warm and windless) started the action. It was all go right from the start, but Stortford soon became encamped in the Hitchin half and refused to budge. Some fantastic forward's work enabled Stortford to create a firm platform to unleash attacks on the Hitchin defence. First over the line was newly fit, Alex Wilson with a try in the 12th minute (conv Stockley). Hitchin gave away a penalty under the post shortly after and knowing that this was going to be a close match, the decision to kick for goal was taken, which was scored by Stockley. Hitchin dug deep and in a moment of attention lapse, they broke through the Stortford defence to touch the ball down. Just before half-time, Shane Leeks managed to claw a try back (conv Stockley) with a terrifically strong run down the wing. One minute later, McKirdy wrestled the ball from a maul and too found himself under the posts (conv Stockley). At the break the score was 24-5.

Having only conceded one score against them, Stortford felt confident going into the second half and this was sealed with an early try from McKenzie (conv Stockley) following a great lineout and drive. Stortford has closed the door on Hitchin by this point and began to dominate the second half. Tries followed from Stockley (conv Dummer), Barnes and another from McKirdy (conv Crockett) to take them well clear.
Hitchin scored a concessionary try in the dying minutes, but it was far too late to significantly impact the scoreline.
