Another sunny day and arguably the first proper day of the season. The 3s were getting fed up of not being able to wear studs and getting sunburnt during a match. Conditions were perfect....soft under foot, only a slight breeze and temperatures less that 20 degrees.
Commence the 3s finest display of handling, technical ability and grit that they have put on yet. From the first whistle Stortford dominated the match and with a great take at the kick-off from Hunt, Foster(c) was over the line leading by example as always. With the forwards taking inspiration from the early try, the ball was secured from a solid scrum to enable the forwards to continue to run at Stevenage. Just 5 minutes after the first score McKenzie was over the line(conv Stockley). Only 3 minutes later, the backs got their hands on the ball and following an amazing dummy-pass, Haslam scored a terrific try (conv Stockley). The rest of the half was completely one-sided and further tries were scored by Dummer, Usher(2) and Leeks(2) (3 convs Stockley). The half-time score stood at 0-50 and Stortford were well in control.
Second half started with a boom! Leeks found space and received a sublime pass from Brunner. Leeks went on to side-step three tackles before scoring a try within 60 seconds of the start of the half. It appeared that whilst Stevenage were able to compete in the scrum, that is all they had, but were able to build no additional phases even if they won the scrummage. As a result, Stortford continued to score seven more tries in the second half. Giles, Usher, Hunt(3), Brunner and Morely (4 convs Stockley, 1 Dummer). It wasn't until we passed 60 minutes did Stevenage come away with some well earned points and with 2 tries and a conversion they picked up their spirits.
Giles received a nasty tendon injury in the second half, but luckily due to the very close proximity of A&E was in hospital within a few minutes. All wish him a speedy recovery.
The supporters were ecstatic at the end when Stortford reached their most convincing win to date.
