Extra A 27 v Tring 3s 19

The Extra A saw their league campaign in Merit 2 kick off with a hard fought win at home against the old adversary Tring! Off the back of two useful friendlies and a good bout of pre-season training, spirits were high and confidence too. Sladey led his team out like William Wallace marching ahead of 600 highland warriors!

However, for much of the first half this confidence seemed mis-placed and half an hour of rushed and over-enthusiastic play saw the scores remain at 0-0. Stortford eventually settles into some patterns and broke the deadlock with a well worked try and the rest of the game panned out excitingly.

As the game went on Stortford’s superiority became apparent, but in spite of this the scores remained close (although some more partisan spectators would point out things the referee missed in the build up to two Tring tries). All in all it was a fine performance by the Extra A, with all 18 players putting in a good shift.

From the old guard rolling back the years, Slayer, Garvie, Sandy … to the young new comers stamping their authority on the senior game, Jack F-P, Alex, Charlie …. Via some great lines from Chris McKibbin, solid distribution from Reedy and Banksy, and the impenetrable defence of Stiglitz to mention but a few. Man of the Match however went to Ben Baker, as ever a silent monster about the park!
