Crusaders put to the sword.

As the scoreline indicates, this was a one-sided game, which was marred by a violent outburst in the second half, which saw a Dings prop red carded and Sean Edwards from Stortford requiring hospital treatment for suspected fractures to his cheek.

The home team started the game strongly and, with their pack well on top at the set scrums, had a platform on which their brand of fifteen-man rugby was able to flourish. The first try came after 6 minutes, when centre, Nick Hankin ran in from halfway after a great break from the base of a ruck by scrumhalf, Tom Banks. George Cullen converted, but was unable to repeat the feat for two subsequent tries after 12 and 16 minutes. Both touchdowns went to in-form winger, Jimmy Rea, on each occasion rounding off some excellent preparatory work by both forwards and backs. The fourth, bonus point try came after only 20 minutes, when Banks dived over from the base of another ruck, this one right under the visitors' posts. Cullen converted to take the score to 24-0 and this was extended to 31-0 after 36 minutes when the flyhalf again converted a try scored by prop, Tom McCrone, who took a loose ball at the middle of a 5 metre lineout and crashed over for an opportunist score. This took the halftime scoreline to 31-0

The skies darkened and hail started to fall during the break, bringing a big drop in the temperature, which was reflected in a marked fall-off in the quality of rugby in the third quarter of the game. Stortford still had a firm grip on the match, but were unable to turn this into the kind of concerted pressure exerted in the first half. It was the visitors who, nevertheless, started to show their frustrations and these eventually overflowed after 61 minutes, when a ruck set up by Edwards broke up with his opposite number kneeling over him and raining punches down. The referee had no option but to show the culprit, Charles Taylor a red card. Stortford were then perhaps guilty of impatience in their efforts to capitalise on the 14-man opposition and failed to produce the kind of clinical rugby played in the first half. Nevertheless, a try came within only 3 minutes, when debutant, Tom Whiteley, off the bench for Hankin, used his pace to round the stretched cover defence to touch down out wide. Cullen's conversion attempt went narrowly wide, but he made no mistake from in front of the posts some 4 minutes later, when Dave Aldam crashed over for another try, after Marcus Cattell had run a great angle to burst onto a flat pass from Steve Ball, breaking off the back of a maul in the Dings 22. The final score of the game came after 76 minutes, when Mike Gallagher was given a clear run to the line by an inside pass from Whiteley, who had left the outside defence for dead after seizing on a loose ball close to the halfway line. Banks, back on the field shortly before to replace Cullen at flyhalf calmly kicked the conversion to take the final score to 50-0.
