Stortford battle through a nervy start to hit top form and run away in the second half to a notable victory

With neither side having registered a win in their first two games and last season's encounters each having been won by the away team, both sides seemed rather tense at the start and, as a result a series of errors occurred. Moseley probably enjoyed the better of the first quarter in both possession and territorial terms, but some outstanding Stortford defence kept the home line intact. It was the away side, nevertheless, that took the lead after 6 minutes, when flyhalf, James Williams kicked a penalty, when the home side was penalised at a breakdown. Stortford then had to withstand a period of sustained pressure on their line, but eventually broke out and immediately threatened a score at the other end. Moseley rallied well, though and repelled the first onslaught, but were unable to get out of their half and were made to pay the price after 16 minutes, when Dan Elsom, returning from a long term injury, seized on a loose ball from a Moseley mistake at their own lineout and burst forward to give Rob Duff a sight of the line, which he exploited brilliantly to beat the last man and touch down out wide. George Cullen drove home the blow to the opposition by making a tremendous conversion. Moseley forced their way back into Stortford's 22 and once again the home defence proved up to the challenge, eventually bursting back upfield, with only some great covering defence by winger, Sam Pointon preventing an immediate try. Stortford were not to be denied, though and a tremendous line break by James Apperley after 34 minutes, gave Nick Hankin room on the outside, which he exploited to the full, cutting inside the fullback and then beating the covering winger to score an excellent try. Cullen's conversion attempt this time flew narrowly wide, as it did 5 minutes later, after Charlie Kingham had scored a crucial 3rd try for his side on the point of halftime. The chance was well taken by the number 8, but he owed the opening to debutant scrumhalf and fellow former Felsted pupil, Connor Mak, who had capped an outstanding first 40 minutes for the First team with a decisive snipe from the base of a ruck.

Stortford started the second half with renewed confidence, which only grew after 6 minutes, when Duff seized on a fortunate bounce from an excellent Tom Coleman kick, just over the head of the covering Moseley winger to run in unopposed for his second and the team's crucial bonus point try. Cullen made no mistake with the conversion this time and, indeed he went on to add two points to a further 4 tries, as Stortford ran riot. Again, though, they had to repel some concerted Moseley pressure and it took a superb turnover from Mak to end the danger. Unfortunately, the scrumhalf was injured in the process, but this only gave another opportunity to Ben Creasey to come on and show his own skills. The next try took 15 minutes to come and this time it was Duff's turn to act as provider, as he committed the last defender to return the first half favour from Apperley to send the number 6 galloping in for a try. The backrow was again instrumental in the next try which came only 4 minutes later, when Cullen was the one to round off some more good rugby by the home team. It took only 2 minutes, before Creasey registered his side's 7th try after Elsom burst forward from excellent ball off the top of a lineout to give his scrumhalf a clear run in to the line. Moseley continued to battle in the face of the home side's onslaught and were rewarded after 77 minutes with a good try to winger, Taraisai Wara round the outside, after Stortford's defence had been sucked in by some forceful, direct running. The conversion attempt went wide, leaving just enough time for the restart, when the visitors' travails took a final twist, with a massive knock-on from the drop-out bouncing straight into a pair of grateful Stortford arms and one pass to replacement wing, Conor Austin was all that was needed to set up the home side's 8th try.

After overcoming early nerves, Stortford had produced some clinical rugby, the whole side performing well, with Tom Coleman at 10 and George Cullen at 15 pulling the strings to great effect. The Westbury Windows and Joinery Man of the Match, though was Rob Duff, who is really finding his feet in the side after joining last season, but the award could easily have gone to James Apperley or, indeed Connor Mak, who both had outstanding games.
