The home side put on early pressure, but a series of mostly unforced mistakes prevented any scores. In contrast, Caldy, with much less of the ball, although initially far from error-free themselves, steadily got a grip on the game and ruthlessly exploited a badly missed tackle in midfield to score a quality converted try through Luke Hibberd after 26 minutes. The visitors could only manage two further ventures significantly beyond halfway before the break, but on each occasion came away with 3 points from penalties by Ben Jones after 34 and 40 minutes. The home side, in contrast seemed to find it progressively harder to make progress against the strong Caldy defence.
Stortford started the second half better and proved the benefit of going through patient phases to win a penalty, converted by Manu Vunipola after 2 minutes, but then reverted to their error-prone ways. Caldy now dominated possession and territory and, although Stortford showed tremendous character in preventing any further scores with some great defending on their own line on a number of occasions, they could produce only one scoring opportunity after a good break by Sam Coleman, but were pushed off their own scrum after Sam Winter was held up over the Caldy line to end the threat.
