Streetwise Ampthill give Stortford a lesson in clinical finishing to overturn a first half lead.

Honours were fairly evenly shared in the first half, with penalties swapped after 10 and 20 minutes to leave the scores level, after the visitors had taken advantage of Stortford travails at the lineouts to take the early lead. The scrums, in contrast were going the home team's way and this eventually enabled Stortford to mount a decisive attack, with quick hands from both forwards and backs creating space out wide. Winger, Chris Smith made the most of the opportunity, cutting inside to commit the defence and find Nick Hankin looping round outside, for the fullback to run in a quality try on 23 minutes, which George Cullen converted well from out wide. Two minutes later, in a marked turnaround of fortunes, Stortford were penalised at their own scrum, providing Ampthill's fullback, James Pritchard an easy opportunity to pull back three points. Stortford started to come increasingly into the game after that and camped on the visitors' line for some 5 minutes. A try was disallowed, when Johnny Neville was adjudged to have been held up over the line and shortly thereafter a further opportunity from another strong 5 metre scrum went begging against a strong Ampthill defence. With half time imminent, the visitors did to us what we had done to Rosslyn Park last week, breaking out from a period of pressure to score a try, as they showed the patience, which maybe Stortford had earlier lacked to go through a few phases in order to create a chance for their powerful hooker, Aleki Lutui to crash over between two stretched defenders. Pritchard's conversion took his side into a barely deserved 3 point lead.

The second half started disastrously for the home side, as a handling error in midfield presented the ball to the opposition, who struck like lightning and one pass - albeit looking suspiciously forward - was enough to see flyhalf, Reeder in for another converted try. Stortford, though surged straight back onto the attack and two penalties in quick succession at scrums produced a yellow card for Ampthill's replacement loosehead prop, Toby Trinder. Inexplicably, given their previous dominance in the scrums and the loss by the opposition of a forward, the option of a further scrum was spurned and a quick tap was taken. The threat was quickly snuffed out by an alert and clever defence and the balance of the game turned once more decisively in favour of the visitors. Yet another lost Stortford lineout allowed flanker, Joe Bercis to dash twenty yards or so towards the Stortford line and one pass was enough to see supporting second row, Alex Woolford in for another converted try to stretch the margin to 17 points after 56 minutes. A little bit of luck finally went Stortford's way only 3 minutes later, when a flykick by an Ampthill back of a poor pass flew straight into the arms of Chris Smith, who had the pace to reach the line out wide for an unconverted try. The visitors surged back onto the attack, but it was their newly aggressive defence that forced another poor pass, as Stortford tried to run the ball out of their 22, which provided another gift-wrapped 7 points to the opposition on 65 minutes. A further try went to the visitors 8 minutes later, when they clinically exploited a 5 metre scrum against a wearying defence for the first receiver to crash over to add another 7 points to their tally. Stortford now showed again the resilience, which is one of their trademarks and, after forcing the visitors back onto the defensive, ran through several phases to open a gap for Dan Leo to dive over under the posts. George Cullen's drop-kicked conversion narrowed the gap to 19 points, but his side was unable to make further inroads in the remaining seconds of the game.

Let there be no doubt about it, Ampthill were good value for their win, which demonstrated the strength of a side that has been in the upper echelons of this league for the last two seasons, based on a huge amount of experience of many of their players. The defeat would, however have been a little more palatable had two of their coaches not led their bench in a display of churlish barracking of opposition and officials, even as their side took control of the game.
