We are the Champions!!!

In front of 120 plus travelling supporters, Stortford soon helped settle any nerves about the outcome of this crucial match with a try after only 3 minutes scored by Jimmy Rea, after multiple phases from the opening Exmouth drop-out allowed Dan Elsom to give the scoring pass to the evergreen winger. Tom Banks converted, but couldn’t quite repeat the feat 10 minutes later, when Johnny Neville touched down, after Rea popped the ball up, having been stopped inches short of his second try. Within 4 minutes, the irrepressible scrumhalf was on the scoreboard again, with a converted try of his own from a quickly tapped penalty, after Exmouth were penalised under their posts, for a breakdown offence, after Will Roberts made a great charge almost to the line. Only 2 minutes later and another try had been scored, when flanker, James Apperley looped round his left winger to finish off another sweeping move, after Sam Winter had made tremendous ground down the right and quick hands did the rest. Banks again added the extras, as he did 17 minutes later, when Steve Ball touched down at the back of a 5 metre scrum out near the touchline. Never flagging in their effort, Exmouth forced their way into the Stortford 22, where they took advantage of a single lapse in the otherwise cast iron Stortford tackling for winger James Harris to touch down under the posts for a converted try, as time ran out in the first half.

The home side started the second period aggressively, but the brief threat was snuffed out by a Dec Caulfield interception on his own 22. The hooker then set off for the distant try line like a hare – albeit one on a diet of steroids! - but, gentleman as ever, decided to wait for the support to catch up, allowing Will Simmonds to round off the try. Nick Hankin, who had been buzzing around the field off his wing all game, finally got on the scoreboard after 20 minutes, when he twice feinted to go inside, before beating defenders on the outside for another unconverted try. The honour of bringing up the 50 points for the visitors went to Banks, after 28 minutes, when he converted a try by Dan Elsom, the flanker running in from 30 yards out, after a clever inside pass from the scrumhalf (now playing at 10, after Tom Coleman had left the field for his brother, Sam) had put Caulfield into space. It took only 2 minutes for the next Stortford try to come, when Sam Winter made another of his many clean breaks in midfield to set Simmonds clear for his second try. This took the score to 7-55 and the 60 points were brought up 6 minutes later, when replacement wing, Ryan Hutler touched down out wide, after the ball had been moved quickly from right to left, after a maul from a 5 metre lineout had been stopped just short on the opposite flank – and so the game ended.

Cue massive touchline celebrations with team and blazers involved and some tears being shed in both groups. Having contributed considerably to Exmouth's bar profits, team and supporters eventually left Exmouth’s clubhouse to continue their celebrations of the League Title elsewhere! The final words go to Coach supreme, Andy Long, who was as emotional as any of the Stortford people afterwards, putting this “Club achievement” as one of the highlights of his rugby career – including playing for England!
