Clifton overwhelmed by a Stortford side clearly determined to bounce back from last week's sub par performance at Canterbury.

The home side was on top right from the word go and, with the scrum dominant and a lineout operating like clockwork, it was very hard for Clifton to get into the game other than for brief periods, in which Stortford's defence held out with typical determination.

It was no surprise, therefore, after 6 minutes, when Dec Caulfield scored a first try at the back of a driving maul after his side had gone through multiple phases with the visitors' defence stretched to breaking point. Tom Bank's conversion took the score to 7.0, which was doubled 5 minutes later, when Steve Ball broke off the back of a driving maul to touch down, following a penalty kick to the corner and a clinical lineout. The formula was repeated 11 minutes later, when it was Matt Tomlinson, who touched down at the back of a driving maul from the lineout. Banks' conversion attempt went narrowly wide. Clifton fought back and, for a few minutes tested the resolve of Stortford's defence, but the pressure was eventually relieved when the home scrum took a ball against the head for the second time. It took until the final minute of the half for Stortford to register their bonus point try, when fullback, Will Simmonds rounded off some good handling by the backline, taking the scoring pass from Sam Winter to touch down out wide and, once again Banks' attempt to add the two points was just wide, leaving the score at the break at 24-0.

Stortford seemed to have lost a bit of momentum during a long halftime break and Clifton did their best to exploit this but, despite some determined running and handling, which put some pressure on the home line, they were held out, with a fine last ditch tackle by Nick Hankin finally snuffing out any danger. It was 15 minutes, therefore, before the next try came and this required Jimmy Rea to seize on a loose ball, when it appeared that a Stortford attack had faltered, to force his way past two defenders and touch down close to the posts, giving Banks an easy two points. The home side was now right on top and two unconverted tries by Nick Hankin after 62 and 68 minutes stretched the lead out to 41 points. The first was pretty much a formality after another dominant Stortford scrum 5 metres out, but the second had to be run in from some 60 yards out, after attacking Clifton ball was turned over and quick hands from Hugh Michell gave the winger just enough room to get round the outside of the scrumhalf and beat the covering fullback to the line. The next try came only 2 minutes later, when Ryan Hutler, making his Stortford debut as a replacement on the wing gave a great return pass out of a tackle to Simmonds, supporting on the inside, for the fullback to canter in under the posts to add, with Banks' kick, another 7 points. The best was left until last, though, with the home backs now cutting loose and a sweeping movement, including some impressive sleight of hand from both Pier Dotta and Rea gave Sam Winter an open run to touch down under the posts. Dotta's conversion ended the scoring and rounded off a resounding victory.

It was great to see staunch Club member, Mark Radley and his dad, Bill, with family and friends enjoying the day at Silver Leys as both Match Day and Man of the Match sponsors through their company, Radleys - with the third generation of the clan represented in typical storming fashion for the Mitres on the adjoining pitch. Thanks to all of you for your continuing support! Their First XV Man of the Match was Matt Tomlinson, enjoying another barnstorming day at the heart of the pack.
