Cup Game at Hitchin RFC
28th October 2018
On Sunday 28th October, a chilly and crisp afternoon saw a team of 13 bsrfc ladies players travel away to hitchin ladies to face their first ever women’s junior cup game.
With 2 players short of a full team, Stortford ladies were determined to make the most of this experience.
KO began, with hitchin matching numbers to make it equal standings, within 5 minutes and a shaking start to Stortford, hitchin managed to slip through and score an unconverted try.
This woke the Stortford side up, and they got the ball rolling with a few big hits from the forwards, unfortunately a knock to an already injured Stortford scrum half saw Jas Bice leave the field early. This prompted some more positional changes and with hitchin kindly matching numbers again, the sides began the battle.
A few high flying line outs and closely fought rucks, saw hitchin score a couple more tries. Forward Carleigh Lalonge managed to rumble through hitchin’s tight defence to run in a try from 50m, but Shortly after retiring to the physios side for repair. A try saving tackle from Georgia reed kept the score line to 32-5.
Half time score 32-5.
As the second half started, Hitchin lent a player to help match the numbers again.
Stortford started well, with a new tactic of keeping it tight and running through the forward phases, with props Eloise Augustine and Alex Willson running it up hard.
The sun was starting to get lower and hitchin used this advantage to put the ball up into the air. Wingers Kate Hawkins and Cat Gleed taking the opportunity to use some fancy footwork to beat the oncoming stampede of hitchin’s backs to secure the ball. This gave Stortford the opportunity to practice some line outs. Hitchin presses hard causing Stortford to make mistakes, leading to hitchin’s score board rising. Another try saving tackle came from Nikky Wilkins to give Stortford a breather.
Stortford saw Izzy Warrington who had stepped into fly half for the day running some lines and creating space take a knock from a big tackle ending her day on the pitch. Another shuffle of positions, with Megan Lines moving from 12 to 10 and a borrowed player from Hitchin, saw the game restart.
After a few tries from Hitchin, Stortford were determined to finish on a high, some massive hits coming from Nikky Wilkins (C) and a great defensive line from Charley Parker saw Hitchin on the back foot from surprise. A final push from Stortford allowed the team to gain back some possession. A determined number 8 run from Georgia Reed saw her run over the line for the final try and play of the match. Finishing with a final score of 49-10.
Big shout to back of the match Nikki Chapman who stepped up from outside centre to scrum half, with great running lines and defending. Forward of the match was Hayley Fryer who played second row for the first time had made some cracking tackles throughout the game.
Thank you to Hitchin Ladies RFC for being a welcoming team and for a great game! And Stort Images for taking some great shots!
