The U16s marked their return to play after a month off with a win over fellow HML side Datchworth. Following an evenly balanced opening, Stortford opened the scoring when Carter found a gap following several phases inside the opposition 22 after 10 minutes. Datchworth were keen to hit back and were unlucky when camped on our try line, Matt F intercepted an errant pass and sprinted the length of the pitch to deliver our second try. Our guests heads did not drop, and they were rewarded for some excellent rucking and ball retention when they crossed for their opening try to make the score 12-5. The blues finally seemed to wake, and following the best move we produced all game, the ball found Matt out wide and our winger was able to score in the corner. The conversion may have been missed, but we headed into the break with a convincing, if slightly undeserved 17-5 lead.
The second half began brightly; some swift handling though our midfield providing fast ball to Fabian in open space and our outside centre was able to pick a line, fend of two tackles and score under the posts. Five minutes later Jacob marked his return to the A team with a smart finish following good interplay with Ali. Fabian nailed both conversions and the match appeared to be decided with a 31-5 lead.
Datchworth continued to battle on, and two late scores closed the match 31-17 - a scoreline reflective of the closeness of the contest. Many thanks to all of the coaches and players from Datchworth for making this a competitive fixture played in a great spirit - we always enjoy our meetings and look forward to seeing you again.
Player of the match went to Matt for his two tries, with "Bomb-squad" Calan also being recognised in the post match celebrations!
