Lessons to be learnt but gutsy performance by Stortford

Match Report –
Bishop Stortford RFC U14 vs. Westcliff RFC U14:
‘”A Tale of Two Halves”
19 – 31
Try Scorers:
Tries: Henry Felgate, Harry Wright, Alex Waring
Conversion : Alex Waring (x2)

One of the most important elements of playing at home is not to allow the Away team to start strongly. Unfortunately, three early tries were conceded from distance from a number of missed tackles. Will Powell performed excellently from Full Back, preventing a number of other scoring opportunities from one on one tackles. (not an easy skill.)
Stortford did not start to impose themselves on the opposition until the half- time whistle blew. The team found themselves 19-0 down at half time and strong words were needed to transform the side that was lurking beneath the surface.
A change of half- backs and centres brought the desired result, as the team played with more structure. A heavy Westcliff pack started to suffer, as Stortford moved the ball through their hands, spreading the play. The result – two tries from the team’s wingers and another from a sniping run from Harry Wright. The level of competitiveness at the breakdown improved and players started to perform to their potential; turnovers were created and the inter-play between back and forwards was the best this season.
However, a strong Westcliff team hit back with their strong runners to cross with a further two tries to put the game beyond a winnable situation, having clawed our way back.
Stortford won the second half – 19 – 12 and left the boys feeling that it was a game that should and could have been won.
Coaches Thought of the week: - Rugby is a simple game when players attack the breakdown and keep hold off the ball.

Improved Areas:
Oli Moore – body angles to turnover ball at the breakdown.
Wingers – continued high % finishing.
B Team players stepping into the A Team and making selection challenging.

Areas of work:
1. Bringing strong runners to ground
2. First up tackles
3. Support play entering into the contact situation.
