Stortford escape potential banana skin in local derby against a Shelford side battling to escape the drop zone.

Once again, Stortford started slowly and, having squandered early possession, built on immediate dominance at the scrum, they conceded a try on the home side's first possession. One good offload out of a tackle and some straight running through the centre was enough to breach some wafer-thin tackling and the try under the post saw Shelford into a 7 point lead after 5 minutes. It took 12 minutes for the visitors to slowly work their way back into the match and good build-up work by Sam Winter, Jimmy Rea and Arran Mahoney saw their side ensconced in the home 22 before the scores were levelled with a converted penalty try after the second of two scrums close to the Shelford line was halted illegally. Stortford now started to build upon their clear superiority in the scrums to take a stranglehold on the game, resulting in tries after 25 and 27 minutes to Steve Ball and Mike Gallagher, both of which were well converted by Tom Coleman. The first came with a good finishing burst by the flanker from a position created by an excellent break from a scrum in their own half by Mark McCraith, supported by Dave Aldam and the second followed a great break by Mahoney from another powerful scrum, taken on by Rea, whose clever chip kick inside was touched down by his fellow winger. Stortford's defence was, however, once again found wanting on 32 minutes when they first allowed Shelford to win their own ball at a shambles of a lineout and then failed to hold out a second phase forward drive. The conversion took the score to 14-21, but a second (bonus point) try for Ball at the back of a driving maul from a 5 metre lineout after 38 minutes took the halftime score to 14-26, which was a better reflection of the balance of play over the half.

The visitors started the second period more strongly and a great take by Winter from a well-judged Shelford box kick and a tremendous break by the same player cut a gaping hole in the home defence and an accurate pass to Rea in close support was all that was needed for the winger to register his third try in two matches after only 3 minutes of the half. Coleman's conversion took the lead out to 19 points, but he gave way a few minutes later to George Cullen coming off the bench, who on 17 minutes added a further try after his side's third or fourth scrum against the head allowed McCraith to break into space and provide a clear route to the line for the flyhalf. Having converted his own try, Cullen repeated the feat only 4 minutes later, after inside centre, Marcus Cattell cantered in under the posts from a decisive break by Mahoney off excellent quick lineout ball inside the Shelford 22. A combination of Shelford doggedness and some loss of cohesion by Stortford produced a period where the home side enjoyed the better of possession and territory, but the visitors showed considerable determination in defence to prevent any further breach of their line. Almost inevitably, the final score of the game came from yet another dominant visiting scrum, which resulted in the second penalty try of the game after 38 minutes, as the Stortford eight drove hard at the Shelford line. Cullen's conversion took the final score to 14-54.

This convincing win takes Stortford back up to 4th in the league and all still to play for!
