Although on the front foot from the word go, Stortford did not find it at all easy to break down an obdurate Redingensians defence. With a strong edge in the scrums and the lineout also working well, the home side had a stream of good possession and were rewarded after 7 minutes with a try scored by prop, Rory Young from a driving maul after a 5 metre lineout. George Cullen's conversion attempt from out wide fell just short and he again failed narrowly some three minutes later, after a second try, scored by Sam Coleman, after a quick lineout had caught the visiting defence completely napping for once. Redingensians refused to give in, though and some further stern defence was called for, as the home side continued to batter their line. It is a measure of how effective their tackling was, that it took until the 39th minute for the next score to come and even then, it required a penalty try to break the deadlock. The decision came after two penalties at successive scrums on the Redingensians' line and Cullen added the two points. Within a minute of the restart another penalty was given to Stortford on the opposition 22 for a breakdown offence, for which the visitors' No 4, Ollie Taylor was yellow-carded. With time running out, Cullen took the three points to take his side into the break with a 20-0 lead.
Stortford started the second period where they had left off and scored the bonus point, fourth try after 4 minutes, with flanker, Baxter Wilson, rounding off some more patient team build-up work to touch down from the back of a driving maul. Cullen converted, as he did 7 minutes later, when Wilson again scored a try, as he broke decisively from the back of another strong scrum and ran open, as his backs threatened to go blind. Replacement backrow, Rory Banks, on for Dave Aldam was next on the scoresheet for the home side, crashing over from close quarters after 23 minutes off third phase ball, after a searing break by Cullen through the middle had been halted. The centre was again successful in adding the 2 point to take the scoreline to 41-0.It is a measure of Stortford's dominance to that stage of the game that Redingensians had not managed to mount a single attack worth the name, but they showed their fighting spirit by launching a concerted assault, after a mistake in midfield by the home side had given them possession and they were rewarded several phases later with an unconverted try to second row Taylor on 68 minutes. Within 3 minutes, though Stortford had scored another try, when Joe Clarke on as a replacement on the left wing for injured, Jimmy Rea took a scoring pass from Luke Webber, after Nick Hankin had made a telling burst, looping round through midfield off the opposite wing. Cullen's excellent conversion from the touchline took the score to 46-5, but he was unable to repeat this feat 7 minutes later, when Clarke scored his second try right at the death. This came after the winger had cleverly controlled the ball with his foot after a deft grubber kick from Cullen before gathering the ball and diving over in the corner.
The Belcom Man of the Match award went to number 8, Mark McCraith, who had taken full advantage of the strong pack performance overall to put in a rampaging performance with ball in hand.
The First team victory reflected another great success for the Club off the field today, with another massive Ladies' Day (the day, not the ladies!)for the benefit of the Breast Cancer Care charity, having been held alongside the match and rounded off with a highly successful auction of each of the players' matchday shirts. As if this weren't enough, the day ended with a highly entertaining match under floodlights between veterans of the Stortford and Harlow clubs, with funds being raised for St Clare Hospice. Stortford also won the match, to make a clean sweep for the Club at home, with the Fourth team having enjoyed a convincing cup win over Letchworth 3rds to take them through to the final. Congratulations to all concerned!
