Stortford fade in second half against a strong Taunton team, whose half time substitutions prove decisive.

This top of the table clash, sponsored by Matchday Sponsors, GQ Wealth Management was fiercely contested for most of the game, but Taunton dominated the 3rd quarter, with replacement backrows, Dan Lee and Barrie-John Chapman making a huge impact to seal a derserved win.

The visitors also enjoyed the better of the early exchanges, but it was Stortford that registered the first score, when Nick Hankin caught a pinpoint cross kick from flyhalf, George Cullen, to beat his opposite number on the inside and plunge over for a try after 9 minutes. The conversion from out wide into the breeze fell short. It took only three minutes, though for the lead to change hands, as the visitors drove a lineout from a Stortford penalty some 25 metres before releasing their backs, who took full advantage of a lucky bounce from a charged-down kick, which fell straight into the hands of Freddie Fraser with the defence totally wrong-footed, so the centre was able to stroll over under the posts, giving Gary Kingdom an easy conversion.. Stortford enjoyed much the better of the next 20 minutes' play, but small errors - often caused by trying to force play in difficult, damp handling conditions - and good Taunton defence kept them out until the 30th minute, when Matt Tomlinson rounded off an excellent passage of play, involving both backs and forwards through many phases by bursting through the last line of defence for a try under the posts. Cullen's routine conversion took the scoreline to 12-7 but, although the home side continued to dominate territory and possession for the remainder of the half, they could not add to their tally before the break.

The visitors came out for the second half with all guns blazing and replacement backrows, Dan Lee (loaned back for the game by Cornish Pirates) and Barrie-John Chapman were particularly prominent. Stortford suddenly seemed incapable of winning their own lineouts and, with the visitors now also achieving an edge in the scrums, it was little surprise that they dominated the next 20 minutes. Stortford mustered one convincing attack through some impressive handling by their backs down the right wing, producing a home lineout on the opposition 22. When this went badly astray, though, that led to a period of ferocious attack from the visitors, producing two tries after 14 and 17 minutes of the half. The first went to Lee, who, powerfull runner that he undoubtedly is, had no right to run some thirty yards through several ineffectual tackles to touch down close to the posts, giving Kingdom an easy conversion to take his side into a 2 point lead. This was extended by another 5 points, when fellow Cornish Prates loanee, Alex O'Meara finished off some slick handling, after Stortford lost the ball almost directly from the restart. Stortford enjoyed a brief rally, but this produced only three points via Cullen's boot, after Taunton were penalised for handling the ball in a ruck after 21 minutes. More lost lineouts allowed the visitors to set up camp in Stortford's half and the decisive score and bonus point try came after 71 minutes, when centre, Alex Brown showed nimble feet to escape some more dubious Stortford tackling to touch down quite close to the base of another solid set scrum, giving Kingdom a relatively easy conversion. This looked to be game over, but Stortford finally showed their resolve with a strong attack of their own, which brought, 5 minutes later a penalty try, after the visitors were penalised at a set scrum. immediately following two other penalty offences. This heralded a frantic final few minutes and, although a clever chip kick from his own 22 by Cullen threatened briefly to breach the tight Taunton defence once again, in the end, they were able to hold out fairly comfortable for a crucial - and deserved - away win.
