Winter makes winning debut as Stortford skipper.

With Club Captain, Tom Coleman unavailable because of work commitments, Sam Winter stood in as skipper and, with Pier Dotta moving up to flyhalf, also returned to his former position of full back. It's probably fair to say that he had an enjoyable day in both capacities in this match sponsored by Nockolds Solicitors.

The visitors, in fact started strongly and, with a strong diagonal wind in their favour, ,exerted some pressure, forcing a couple of penalties, the second of which was in range of the posts, but the attempted three-pointer fell just short. Stortford immediately looked more dangerous with their first possession and good handling through the backs created room down the right wing for flanker, Baxter Wilson, who crashed over for a try in the corner from 20 metres out after 4 minutes. Pier Dotta's difficult conversion attempt directly into the wind fell just short. Wilson again made his mark after 10 minutes, when he burst through Launceston's midfield defence to give Dom Morris the room to use his pace to run round the last defender for a try, which Dotta this time converted convincingly. The Wilson show continued with another try to the flanker after 14 minutes, running in from some 30 metres, using a two-man overlap outside to draw the defence. The conversion went narrowly wide to leave Stortford 17 points ahead. Despite continuing to dominate possession and territory, the home side was unable to add further points for the next 20 minutes, although coming close a number of times, with Harry Marner particularly unlucky to be tackled into touch right on the line, after he had rounded two defenders in a 35 metre dash. On 35 minutes, though, the breakthrough came in the shape of Wilson's hat-trick try, when he was driven over by the rest of the pack from a lineout 10 metres out, which also represented the bonus pointfourth try. While the margin might well have been greater, the resultant 22-0 halftime scoreline, playing against the wind was more than satisfactory.

Launceston, despite now facing the elements, started the second period brightly and dominated possession for the first 8 or 9 minutes. As soon as Stortford got their hands on the ball, though, they looked more threatening and it was skipper, Sam Winter who rounded off some good handling after 14 minutes with a try, well converted by Dotta. This was the launchpad for a period of sustained Stortford domination, producing 3 more converted tries within a quarter of an hour to take the lead out to 50 points. Harry Marner's hard running was rewarded with the first and third after 57 and 68 minutes, the second being particularly impressive, as he stepped inside against the flow of play and beat two defenders from some 30 metres out. The best try of the day, though went to his fellow winger, Nick Hankin after 62 minutes, when he exploited room given by a break down the blindside of a scrum inside the Stortford 22 to sprint some thirty metres down the line before putting in a perfectly judged kick over the head of the last defender and comfortably win the race to the touchdown. Despite the big deficit, Launceston refused to throw in the towel and their fighting spirit had its reward after 74 minutes, when they took full advantage of a momentary lapse in Stortford's otherwise solid defence to burst through to score a smart try. The relatively easy conversion took the score to 50-7 and neither side was able to add to their tally before the final whistle blew.

The bubbly from man of the match sponsors, Harlow Agricultural Machinery almost inevitably went to Baxter Wilson for his outstanding first half attacking performance, backed up by solid second half defence. An honourable mention, though went to Pier Dotta, who orchestrated the efforts of an impressive backline with great conviction from flyhalf.

Next week's opponents, promoted Redingensians seem to be finding their feet now at this level, with recent results belying their lowly league position and a tough encounter can be expected on what is likely to be a heavy pitch, suiting their reputedly big pack.

Congratulations to the Blues again on another convincing win, stretching their run to 11 in a row, with Westcombe Park today's victims.
