The visitors started strongly and had a clear edge in most aspects of the game, culminating in a good try for Sam Winter after 8 minutes, following an excellent break by Tom Coleman and good interplay with Tom Banks. Mike Gallagher’s conversion stretched the lead to 7 points but, from this point on Stortford steadily frittered away the advantages they had built. Carelessness in possession brought a number of soft turnovers and the early advantage enjoyed at scrum time slowly dissipated too. Dorking took advantage to drag themselves slowly into the game and scored their first try after 21 minutes, with winger, Benji Marfo rounding off some efficient handling. A penalty to Stortford after 26 minutes for a breakdown offence after a good, hanging Tom Coleman kick took the scoreline to 5-10, but his side failed to build on this and a badly missed tackle off the back of a lineout allowed flyhalf, Cameron Pimlow room to step his way past a wrong-footed defence for a converted try after 39 minutes. 12-10 at halftime.
Stortford’s second half performance deteriorated even further, with lineout ball drying up almost completely and, despite a continuing edge in the scrums for the visitors, an increasingly confident Dorking started to take control. Two poor Stortford kicks out of defence were punished, when the second fell to wing, Kariym Irving who, taking advantage of some not too subtle obstruction by one of his teammates to prevent Banks from making an early tackle, sprinted diagonally through the remaining defence with barely a hand laid on him to touch down close to the posts for a converted try. Another unconverted try to Dorking came after 25 minutes, when one of their midfield backs exploited a gaping hole close to a breakdown on Stortford’s 22 to slice through for a very soft score. Finally showing the patience to go through a series of phases, Stortford were rewarded with a penalty try after 36 minutes, following 2 successive penalties by the home side at scrums on their own 5 metre line. Gallagher’s conversion took the scoreline to 24-17 to gain a losing bonus point for his side. Stortford showed their usual fighting spirit in the closing minutes and applied some pressure, despite going down to 14 men for the last five minutes, after Tom McCrone was sin-binned for a reckless late challenge, as a Dorking player chipped ahead. With the lineout still not functioning, though they didn't seriously threaten to get the equalising score against a now determined Dorking defence.
