Picking up where they left off last week at Sale, Stortford started quickly and overwhelmed the visitors with some slick running rugby, clocking up the fourth bonus point try within 24 minutes. Tom Mills was first to touch down, after only 3 minutes, seizing on a loose ball off a Dings hand inside the opposition 22 to sprint over, Mike Cooke adding the conversion. Isaac Bell was driven over 7 minutes later from a lineout some 8 metres out for an unconverted try, but Cooke was back on target 4 minutes later, after the hooker touched down again - this time having to work considerably harder, breaking off the back of another lineout maul and bursting through a couple of tackles. Mills was back on the scoreboard in the 24th minute with a try of his own making, going outside his opposite number in the centre, before stepping infield to outpace the cover defence from some 40 metres to give Cooke an easy conversion. Having lost Austin Pope to injury, Stortford seemed to lose a bit of momentum briefly and a battling Dings side took advantage of two successive penalties to set up a 5m lineout, from which hooker, Tom Gollop broke through a fragmented maul for a try, converted by Jamie Elswood. The home side bounced back and Will Rogers touched down five minutes later, seizing on the loose ball and crashing over, after Chris Bolton was tackled just short of the line. Cooke again added the extras. It was the visitors, though that had the final score of the half, creating room for winger, Tom Hargan to use his pace to go outside the cover defence from 30 metres out. Elswood made an excellent conversion to take the halftime score to 33-14.
Dings exerted some early pressure after the break, but Stortford's aggressive defence was up to the task and it was the home side that registered the first try of the half, with Declan Murphy set free to run round under the posts, after a half break by Jack Biard, supported by Mills, who gave the scoring pass. Cooke again converted. Dings countered and an excellent, long, flat pass from George Boulton took out two onrushing defenders to give Ezra Caven, on the wing a clear run in for an unconverted try out wide after 58 minutes. Stortford were quick to respond, with a clever solo try for scrumhalf, Bolton, breaking down the blindside of a ruck and chipping over the last defender to go over untouched and Cooke again converted. The visitors bounced back once more and Max Rivers won a fifty fifty race for a bouncing grubber kick, courtesy of a friendly bounce for another unconverted try. It was Stortford, though that finished with a flourish, scoring two more tries. The first was scored by Chris Smith, given a clear run-in, when Bolton broke down the narrow side from the fringes of a 5m lineout maul. This would have been a fitting end to the match for the popular winger, playing his last home league match after 6 years in the squad, but the icing on the cake for him was to be allowed to kick the conversion that ended the game, after Murphy had scored Stortford's 9th try 5 minutes later. The touchdown under the posts came after Will Rogers, who finished the game playing in the centre after a number of injuries, put in a testing long kick and followed up to put in a crunching tackle on the covering defender, forcing the ball loose for the fullback, now on the wing to scoop up unopposed.
Special thanks go to today's Matchday Sponsors, Jonny Hey's Westbury Garden Rooms, long-time supporters of the Club and to his nephew, Sam Prior and his company BIT Solutions, also stalwart supporters, who sponsored the Man of the Match award. This went to skipper, Will Rogers, who wishes it to be known that he is not looking to make a permanent move into the centres!
