Bishop's Stortford 1st XV 20 Plymouth Albion 39.

Error-prone Stortford, clearly second best on the day.

Stortford started the game in lively fashion, but a knock-on, after some good interplay had stretched the visitors' defence, unfortunately set the pattern for most of the first half, with errors occurring at regular intervals. Plymouth, not exactly full of confidence themselves at the outset. took full advantage, ran hard and straight in possession and were rarely tested in defence in the first half. They were, perhaps, fortunate to be awarded a penalty try after 7 minutes, when Fraizer Kiff leapt to intercept a lobbed inside pass and undoubtedly knocked the ball forward. The proximity to Stortford's try line probably made a yellow card inevitable, but, high as the ball had been thrown, there appeared to be an element of doubt as to whether it would have lead to a try. Stortford came back with a Mike Cooke penalty goal on 19 minutes, but were soon 11 points behind, when Plymouth scrumhalf, Jack Oulton sniped from the base of a ruck for a try, converted by Tom Putt. The fullback added a further 3 points 3 minutes later, after a Stortford defensive lineout was lost and also converted the visitors' 3rd try by Shea Cornish on the stroke of halftime to take his side into the break with a deserved 6-27 scoreline.

Stortford obviously used the halftime break well and started the second period like a train, scoring 2 converted tries in the first five minutes. The first came only a minute in, with Kiff diving over from the base of a ruck after some good handling, with Austin Pope and Charlie Briers to the fore. The second try was a tremendous solo effort by Jack Biard, first wriggling through a narrow gap in the otherwise very strong Plymouth defence and then out pacing all the covering defenders to run in from some 30 yards. Back within 7 points, Stortford, unfortunately couldn't maintain the momentum, s they slipped back into their error-ridden ways. First they gave away an offside penalty, to relieve renewed pressure on the visitors' 22 and then, shortly afterwards, a long pass was thrown which eluded all four of the waiting players, with Plymouth's defence stretched. The opposition needed no second invitation and swept upfield for Jake Clemson to take advantage of some suspect defensive cover close to a breakdown to crash over close to the posts for their bonus point try, again converted by Putt. Plymouth were again in control now and a fifth try came after 63 minutes, with Harrison Legg picking up a loose ball thrown hopefully inside, as a teammate was being tackled into touch. Worse was to follow, as Dan Powell was sent off shortly afterwards, having been shown two yellow cards simultaneously - the first apparently for cumulative team offences and the second for dissent. The team did show their character in the remaining 12 minutes to prevent any further Plymouth score and, indeed did muster a threat of their own at the death but, rather typical of their afternoon, ended the game by losing an attacking lineout.
