After Blackheath missed an early penalty shot at goal, Stortford struck back strongly with a try to Jack Biard, after Josh Stannard fielded a poor defensive kick by the visitors, stepped outside a first-up tackle and committed the cover defence, before setting his centre clear to the posts. Mike Cooke added the conversion, but Blackheath soon struck back with an unconverted try to scrumhalf, Jordan Burns, finishing off a length of the pitch move, after an attacking Stortford penalty failed to make touch and the defence appeared to have switched off. From that point on, a strong and well-drilled visiting side steadily took control. With Burns a constant threat from the base of rucks and mauls and the team committed, once the ball was won, to keep it moving, they would have tested the strongest defence and, at times, Stortford fell short of such standards. They were guilty also, quite often of being stripped of the ball in contact, thus conceding a lot of possession and the visitors took full advantage. Stortford stretched their lead to 5 through a Cooke penalty after 17 minutes, but Blackheath's free-flowing attacks became remorseless, bringing three tries in a rush between the 26th and 32nd minutes. Tom Ffitch scored the first, which he converted, as he did the second, touched down by Noah Sloot, who also bagged the 3rd. Stortford were in danger of being overrun and conceded a 5th try - possibly Blackheath's best - as first half time ran out.
Stortford were much more competitive in the second half, stemming the opposition's momentum for long spells. but went a further 3 points behind after 7 minutes of the half, being penalised under pressure in their own 22 after repeated questioning of a debatable breakdown offence resulted in a loss of 20 metres. It was another 21 minutes before the home line was breached again, with the final try going to Jake Hennessey, after an attacking lineout from a penalty for a high tackle. It looked as if all the defending they had had to do might have wearied the home side, with a gap found all too easily in midfield, as the ball was moved away from the lineout, but Stortford dug deep and the final chance of the game actually went their way. Good, quick handling down the right almost brought a consolation try, but the final pass was knocked on.
Our thanks today go to Matchday Sponsors, great, long-term supporters, Tees and to the Match sponsors, Price Bailey, whose backing of the Club also extends back many years. This week's award went to Jack Biard for his tireless work both in attack and defence.
