Stortford were very quick out of the blocks, spinning the ball through hands and were rewarded after only 2 minutes with a try to James Ayrton, sprinting in from 40 yards out, after a pinpoint long pass from Matt Riddington opened up a huge gap in midfield. Dan Powell kicked the conversion and his side were soon on the front foot again, with Ayrton gathering a chip kick from his flyhalf around halfway and bursting into the opposition 22. This time, though, the cover defence was strong and the ball was knocked on, as the skipper tried to offload. The visitors had a clear advantage in the set scrums and a number of Stortford handling errors, not only disrupted their usually fluent interplay, but delivered a number of front row penalties to the powerful opposition. These and several breakdown penalties allowed the visitors to dominate much of the possession for the rest of the half and, with their pack showing some prowess at lineouts too, it was no surprise that they monopolised the scoring before halftime. Hooker, Harry Wilkinson was the executioner-in-chief, scoring tries after14 and 29 minutes from well-executed lineout drills. The first was a routine driving maul and the second switching ball quickly back to the tramlines, where, from little more than 5 metres out, he was able to crash through a tackle for the touchdown. Tom Putt kicked an excellent conversion to give his side a 7-12 lead at the break. But for some dogged Stortford defending this margin might well have been wider.
Stortford were still a little accident prone in possession in the early stages of the second half, but stuck to their guns and, having managed to go through several phases without mishap, they were rewarded with a try out wide to Jake Morris after 46 minutes, when the winger won the race to touch down a grubber kick from Riddington. Powell produced an excellent conversion to get his side's noses in front. The home backs were now looking more and more threatening and probably should have secured another try some 5 minutes later, after a strong burst up the wing by Josh Stannard, but his inside pass went forward. Shortly afterwards, Plymouth, no longer exerting the forward control of the first half, lost control of the ball at the back of one of their own scrums and the resultant turnover was quickly exploited, as the ball was moved rapidly to and fro to stretch the tiring pack, eventually producing a gap for Will Roberts to dive over under the posts. Powell converted for a 9 points' lead with 54 minutes gone, but Plymouth fought back and, aided by a soft breakdown penalty in midfield established a platform for their forwards to raise a fresh gallop, pounding repeatedly at the Stortford line. Despite some heroic defence, a number of penalties were conceded, resulting, eventually in a yellow card for Connor Lloyd as a maul, once again drove at the line. The visitors maintained their relentless pressure, which was eventually rewarded with another driving maul try to replacement hooker, David McGregor, well converted by Putt, narrowing the points margin to only 2. Almost instantly, though, Stortford showed their strike-power with the try of the match, when Chris Smith returned a kick out of defence with a powerful run up the middle and the ball was quickly switched to fellow winger, Stannard who dummied and broke down the outside to find support inside and quick hands saw Austin Pope go through a gap for the score. The home side now looked in control and ended the game with a flourish, with Ollie Jones scoring out wide, winning the race to touch down a clever grubber kick from Ayrton, as time ran out.
