It was raining tries on Sunday

Wet and windy conditions couldn’t dampen the efforts for the Bishops Stortford ladies team on Sunday when they hosted league rivals Deeping devils.

A fairly one sided affair began after only 4 mins when, following initial tussles between the two forward packs, the ball was passed along the line to full back Raquel Obama-Fredas who outpaced the opposition to win the foot race and notch up the first points of the game. Goddard converted to make it 7-0.

Repeatedly, the home side structured phases amongst the forwards producing good quality ball which was then passed out to the eagerly waiting, predatory backs to round off the team efforts.

A further 2 tries from Fredas gave her a first half hatrick as well as a well worked try from backs replacement Amber King.

The other first half tries came by way of the dominant forward effort. As the match opened up, Georgia Read received a pass from fly half Jasmine Bice putting her neatly through a gap. Read’s pace and power did the rest and she scored under the posts.

Two additional first half tries were to come from strong running forward Carly Lalonge. She busted through the thinly spread defence and showed great pace to race the 40metres for her first. A short time afterwards Lalonge rounded off the half with another five pointer. Half time score 45-0.

Playing against the elements in the second half, the home team continued to play fine expansive rugby.

Further tries were to come in what became an experimental second half for Stortford. The team used this opportunity to put all their moves to test and give match time to all their subs including two players experiencing their first match.

Jai Morris joined the front row and scrummaged strongly as well as playing extremely well in open play. Imogen Spanton came on in the backs and soon settled in, weaving her way through several players to find herself in open play with only the try line in front of her. She raced away from the cover defence to add another five points and was understandably thrilled with her first try.

Further tries were to come from Read, Fredas, Lalonge and King with conversions from both Goddard and Read which completed an emphatic victory for the home side. Final score 85-0

Two weeks time (17th March) sees the team travel to St Neots to face the top of the table team. Having been the only team this season to beat the Cambridgeshire side, the blues will be eager to break their opponents 6month unbeaten spell.
