Letchworth GC Ladies 12 | 17 BSRFC Women

By Christina Radukic

With Storm Isha knocking on Hertfordshire's door, BSRFC Women lined up to take on Letchworth GC Ladies for the second time this season, coming away with a 12-17 victory.

Despite having gained an early advantage with some strong carries, Stortford lost the ball to Letchworth from a knock-on. Some quick thinking from our opposition saw them find the space in our defence and power over the try line to get the first blood of the game.

Not to be dissuaded, some strong defensive work from Stortford ensured their hosts didn't get a repeat performance. Flanker, Lorell Jordan, and scrum half, Chloe Capp, led the charge on this with some particularly impressive tackles - proving that you don't have to be big to pack a punch.

Thanks to Stortford’s skill at the breakdown, the women in blue were able to turn the ball over and start gaining some ground for themselves. Strong carries from the forward pack finally resulted in a penalty for Stortford on the 5-metre line, quickly taken by vice-captain Capp to equalise the score (5-5) heading into halftime.

With the wind now behind them, some strong carries from tighthead prop, Ellie-Jayne Cappuccini and number 8, Charlotte Wheeler, helped Stortford to keep the upper hand. Having worked the way up the pitch, Eva Radukic - at hooker this week - weaved round the opposition to bring the score up to 5-10.

Battling against the wind, fly-half Amy Vernon converted to give BSRFC Women the comfort of a 5-12 margin.

A continuation of close-knit teamwork from Stortford saw Wheeler power the ball over the line in her usual fashion. Unfortunately, the wind scuppered Capuccini's plans to convert, bringing the score to 5-17 with 10 minutes to go.

With the increasingly troublesome weather working against them, it was clear that Stortford’s energy reserves were depleting. A series of penalties given away resulted in a penalty try to Letchworth at the end of the match, bringing the final score to 12-17.

A great effort from all involved to bring home another win in less-than-ideal conditions.
