discipline, effective passing, running lines - the elements were there

As the evenings get darker and that little bit colder we expected the numbers to drop off but the 30 or so players that turned out last night meant we were wrong.

We warmed up with a 'deep running lines' drill that frankly only 'sort of' worked, something the coaches will have to work on, as it is important for our game. We welcomed some new players - who as always did really well - there is a lot to take in on the first night, some occasional players and some welcome old faces (Al Jones actually turned up, in gear and he ran around....).

Starting off with 2 teams of 7 with rolling subs, but with more people arriving as the evening wore on, we split into 4 teams. As usual everyone started off too fast and too eager to pass when taking the touch would benefit more, but soon we settled down to a fast paced game. Communication was great but far too many turnovers with teams not utilising their 6 touches. Special mention to Kenny who told everyone to slow down, make safe passes and use the 6 touches only to speed up (if you can call it speed), throw appalling passes including a special mention one handed pass for a certain try - certain that is if Drew can catch passes about 2 meters ahead of him that are just skimming the grass and all round terrible play.

As the night wore on we swapped teams and after those who had to go had gone! We finished up with a strictly refereed 'final'. Having been warned that restarting had to be on the mark and discipline would have to be high, both teams continued to fall foul - mostly by the dummy half not marking the spot to restart. While it breaks up the flow of the game this is how tournaments are managed and without the discipline we are doomed to give the ball away each time.

NOTES: exciting things are happening in the touch group, there is a North/South winter league been organised we will play a mix of different days in the week away (depending on other clubs availability) and home fixtures, about a fixture per month with a Grand Final in March. We are sorting out details and dates and will let you have them soon. The emphasis is on competition but also inclusive and fun so all are encouraged to join in.

Wed 7th: World Cup Touch Night, after a quick warm up we will get into teams loosely based on who is left in the world cup, and play a round robin tournament. We promised a Prize - we just don't know what it is yet. Again open to all.
