Captain's Corner No.2
2007 -2008 Season

Hello and welcome to this, my new years edition of captains corner. May I take this opportunity to wish you all a very happy new year. I hope the festive season went well for you all, I'm sure it furnished you all with many gifts, as well as slightly larger waistbands in some cases!

The season thus far has provided us with a mixture of emotions. Many an early exchange resulted in us being victorious with some memorable performances, including wins against Civil Service, an emphatic result against Thanet Wanderer's and two fantastically fought contests in the form of Basingstoke and Sutton and Epsom away. The former had everybody's heart in their mouths, and really could have gone either way, right up until the referee halted proceedings not a moment too soon with the triumphant blues 23-25 the good.

Then just two weeks later we were in for another nail biter. Sutton and Epsom really epitomised the phrase, 'a game of two halves'. We were dominant in nearly every aspect in the first period, gaining almost all of our points. However a few forced changes in the pack and our forward dominance suddenly seemed a distant memory. At that point we seemed to enter in to the longest 40 Min's of defensive rugby that 15 players could absorb. Its days like these that remind you what a great team spirit Bishops Stortford has, and what a fine team we can be. Final result 18 - 9.

That victory did wonders for everybody's confidence, and at that point it looked as if the consistency that had been lacking all season, looked as if it could finally be achieved.

Unfortunately not. At that point, with our league position looking relatively stable, we foolishly appeared to relax. Declining numbers at training as well as some stiff London 1 opposition, all resulted in a nightmare run leading into and through Christmas. The responsibility must now fall solely on the 1st team squad to conjure up good numbers on a Tuesday and Thursday and rectify these issues. A task which I believe to be easily achievable, so come on boys, your club needs you!

So with 14 down and only 9 to go, 2008 will I'm sure provide us with some fantastic performances and equally impressive results. So I would now like to both thank you for your support, and urge you to continue cheering on the troops, to help see us victorious throughout the new year.

Good luck and work hard
Paddy
