BSRFC Present... BEER SPECIAL!!!

Message from The Fireworks Committee

Ladies and Gentlemen

I would like to thank you all for a fantastic turnout on Saturday for the very very wet fireworks !!

You are all marvellous and we (BSRFC and the fireworks Committee), could not have done it without you. The weather, as you may have noticed, was definitely against us but we all put on a brave face and made the very best of a extremely testing time.

As Perry said at the gathering before we started - your time is more important to us and the time you gave us on saturday is unmeasurable.

You probably have already guessed that we did not make a profit but we DID break even, so that is yet another positive and personally I feel that one of the biggest postives of the night was that 'The ONE CLUB ethos' that Perry and I so dearly want to see within BSRFC - certainly took a major step forward on Saturday.

Ladies and Gentlemen, thankyou so much once again, can I ask you to pass this on to all those that I do not have email addresses for that gave us so much on Saturday.

Kind Regards

Ros Lennon

National Rugby Clubs Golf Competition Final

BSRFC A & B Teams (Colin Haslam, Robbie Kerr ...39pts, Colin Johnson and Graham Springham ...39pts) were pipped into 4th position on 78 points on count back by Pontefract RFC with Cleckheaton RFC winning with 80 points. The New Course (completed in 1913!!) at Walton Heath GC, hosts of The 1981 Ryder Cup, was a wonderfully tough experience with deep bunkers, heather and gorse to contend with along with great weather and superb greens made the event a day to remember. This competition, superbly run by The Wooden Spoon, was made even better with the excellent dinner being capped by some great memories and stories told by guest speaker David Trick (Bath & England). We will be back next year and hopefully can improve our scores and final position.

Fund Raising Curry Night with Live Band

This event is in aid of raising money for the Minis and 2nd XV team to accompany the 1st XV on their away London Div One League fixture against Jersey RFC on Saturday 18th April 2009. Tickets available from Rachel & Zorba Lewis and through Team Captains.

National Rugby Clubs Golf Championship

Four BSRFC teams, in pairs, took part in the Hertfordshire Rugby Golf Day at Mid-Herts Golf Club on August 1st which is the main charity event for the Wooden Spoon of the year. We ended up with team 1 & 2 winning the event and team 3 & 4 qualifying, so both teams of four qualified for the Regional Final at John O'Gaunt Golf Club on Monday 29th September.

BSRFC Team 1 & 2 ended up in forth position in the Regional Final with the winners being Hemel Hempstead RFC, followed by Barnet Elizabethans RFC in 2nd place and Civil Service RFC in third, all have qualified for the final including BSRFC which is due to be played at Walton Heath GC on Friday 17th October.

Well done boys, furthest we have ever got, let's see if we can win it, there's still life in the old boys!!!!!

Those taking part were

  1. Colin Haslam & Rob Kerr
  2. Colin Johnson & Graham Springham
  3. Paul Maxfield & John Allanson
  4. Rod Homer & John Power (1/08) / Les Clark(29/9)

Bishop's Stortford Annual Golf Day 2008

At BS Golf Club, 19th September 2008

For the umpteenth year running we were blessed with wonderful weather and a great turn out of 55 players supported by our event sponsors Thremhall Park. This is their second year in sponsoring this event and we are sincerely grateful for all their support.

The team event in the morning (Olswang Trophy) consisted of a 9 hole Yellow Ball Stableford Competition and was won by yet another 'Wrinklies' team of Jim Smith, Nigel Paget & Mark Hunt. We beat last year's figure by one with 12 yellow balls being returned.

The longest drive was on the 3rd hole won by Diddy, (Chris Byatt) with approx 250 yds and The Nearest the Pin on the 8th, pond Hole, (The Nick Hey Shield) by Colin Haslam, inside 3ft.

The afternoon format of 18 holes Individual Stableford (The Illiad Trophy) gave us an unexpected winner in Colin Haslam with 40 points, very unexpected especially for him as he organised the event, with Les Clark second and Gareth Abbott third. Gareth also won the President's Chalice as winner of The Over 18 Handicap.

An enormous drive on the 12th, getting close to 330yds was won by a guest, Stuart Sclaire and the Nearest the Pin on the 15th was won by our very own past captain, Paddy Dean, about 5ft.

The guest winner was Oliver Churcher, plays off 3, who also won the Micky Ketteridge Trophy for the Straightest Drive on the 7th.

The Simulator, Nearest the Pin, at Pebble Beach was won by Les Clark with around 5ft and we are indebted to Will Scott for his sponsorship of this fun side event.

The Lost Ball Competition which is £5 to enter, one has to guess the total number of balls lost throughout the whole day, was won by Nigel Paget who correctly guessed the number of 152. Hey guys, we are getting better as last year we had one less player and lost 169.

All the prizes this year were obtained through the BSRFC Club Shop and were pleasantly received from our President, Charlie Dunsford.

Following the prize giving Gareth Smith and team started to tell some tales of the day which of course led to not only financial fines but the variation this year produced 'The BSRFC Snuff Board' followed by a downing of Schnapps.

Probably due to his inebriated state Colin Haslam accepted the vote reluctantly for him to agree to organise the event for one more time.

Next year's event will take place on FRIDAY 25th SEPTEMBER 2009

The Middlesex 7s

Middlesex 7s Cashback

The Middlesex 7s will take place this year on Saturday, 16 August at Twickenham Stadium and we have a great incentive for your Club to attend!

We have automatically registered your Club for our cashback scheme, meaning you will earn up to £10 per ticket for your Club for every ticket sold. Last year over 60 clubs participated in the scheme, with the top performers boosting their Club's coffers by over £700!

The scheme is simple to administer: you do not have to buy tickets up front, nor do you have to collect the money or handle the tickets. For every Adult ticket sold your Club will receive £10 cashback, with £5 for every Junior ticket.

The simplest way to get up and running with the scheme is to circulate the link below to all players, staff and members at your club. Every ticket purchased via the link will be tracked and will earn your Club £10/£5.

Additionally, we have prepared a number of different banners that you might like to display on your Club's website. Again, every ticket purchased via the banners will be tracked back to your club.

Alternatively, you can if you wish collate orders manually and order them over the phone (020 8831 6602).

However the tickets are sold, once your Club is registered, your Club will receive £10/£5 per ticket. After the Sevens your Club will be sent a cheque for the cashback that it has earned. It really is that simple!

So, the sooner you register your Club and get your banner on your Club's website the sooner your Club can start earning money.

Yours,

Barry Aherne

BSRFC GOLF DAY, AT B/S GOLF CLUB, 21st SEPTEMBER 2007

Once again a well supported event with a first for us this year in Thremhall Park supporting the day as Event Sponsors. We had 54 players taking part over the 27 holes and again we were blessed with good weather.

The Olswang Trophy which is the morning round of 9 holes with a Yellow Ball Team (3) Stableford competition was won by an 'Oldies Team' of... The President, one Charlie Dunsford, The Senior Coach, one Colin Johnson and the wrinkly of the team, one Kim Macfie. 18 Yellow Balls started and 11 came back which is a better result than previous years.

Longest Drive went far too long for any club members and was won with around 325 yards to a guest. Charlie Dunsford won Nearest the Pin being at least 20ft away so the competition he was up against must have felt sorry for him!!

The afternoon format of 18 holes Individual Stableford gave us an outright winner in Jan Zelezinski coming in with 44 points off a 24 handicap. Following his winning speech and his great golf he has had 5 stokes knocked off his handicap for all future BSRFC golf events, well done Jan, it must feel great being a winner!!!

The Longest Drive with another massive hit of around 330 yards was clearly won by Steve Ellis and The Nearest the Pin with less than 6 inches to go was won by Colin Johnson. The President's Chalice for the over 18 Handicappers was won by our very own Treasurer, Len Lindop.

Three further individual prizes were awarded with a guest winning the Simulator Nearest the Pin, in fact out of 48 players attempting to hit the green only 2 did. We had a first this year with the Micky Ketteridge Trophy for the Straightest Drive which was won again by a guest who ended up about 2 inches from the white line. Finally the Lost Ball Competition was won by our very own Diddy who guessed exactly how many lost balls were recorded throughout the whole day, a seriously embarrassing total of, 169.

Once the dinner and prizes were awarded Jamie Baker not only entertained us but also financially drained some of us due to individual fines being made for certain goings on throughout the day. Our serious thanks must go to Jamie and Guy from Thremhall Park not only for their financial support but also for their great involvement in the whole of the day. A donation for the Micky Ketteridge Charity was called for and raised £250 for this very good cause. Overall a great day was had by all, so please make a note in your diaries for next year's event which is FRIDAY 19th SEPTEMBER 2008.

Colin Haslam.

TESCO VOUCHERS ARE HERE AGAIN!

TOUCH RUGBY FINALS DAY

Well, we made it through to the end of the Midweek touch rugby league without any serious injury (apart from Paul Kavanagh and his Ankle!) A lot of new faces at the club, many very old faces and a strange breed called 'Footballers' gracing the hallowed turf.

Everyone was guaranteed at least four games and this proved a step too far for a few of the older teams, as the youthful footballers seemed to revel in the extra games as their game improved greatly through the day. Moleys Men looked good as they cruised through to the final of the Cup competition in youthful style, the Has Beens had moments of genius, Garveys Men had a steady day whilst conserving energy for the big push.

The sun shone on the righteous throughout the day and allowed some very open and free-flowing games. These culminated with the Cup Final between Moleys Men and Dare Devil Dudes, and the plate between the Uphill Gardeners and Paddy's Team 'Run Forrest Run'.

Extra time was needed to separate Run Forrest Run and the ever improving footballers for the magnificent Plate. Thank the Lord, the footballers succumbed to the superior tact and experience of our Club Captains Select as Run Forrest Run came away victorious. I can only imagine what the footballers would have been like if they won.

Scott Gleed (Vice Chairman) proudly presents the Plate to Patrick 'Paddy' Dean (hoops) - Club Captain

The Trophy Final was very competitive as expected. After close early exchanges and a midfield stalemate, the youth and pace of Moleys Men began to establish their dominance on the game. The Trophy, as expected, was soon theirs.

Peter Curtis aka Moley (Centre) with the Victorious Squad

A very successful event with some hope for next season, some possible new players and a good event to improve the Club Spirit.

Well done everybody that contributed anything to any part of this tournament as without the fun, participation and communication this would not have been the success it was. Well done Gareth Abbott on grasping the concept and indeed all team Captains and organisers!!!
